It said Muizzu has also been assured of the support of the Pakistani government to meet the immediate development needs of Maldives. The two leaders discussed the top priorities of both the countries and talked about enhancing cooperation in the international arena. Kakar also extended his support and assistance to Maldives’ efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, the release said. Maldives established diplomatic relations with Pakistan on July 26, 1966. While Pakistan is a close ally of China, President Muizzu is also considered pro-Beijing.

Ahead of the general elections to be held in Pakistan on February 8, a 13-member Commonwealth observer team led by former Nigerian President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan will come to Pakistan to conduct an independent and comprehensive assessment of the country’s electoral process. The Media and Public Relations Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat gave this information in a statement. Voting will be held in the general elections in Pakistan on February 8 and about 12.8 crore voters will exercise their franchise.
