New Delhi : India on Thursday welcomed the confirmation of the nomination of Eric Garcetti as the US Ambassador to New Delhi, saying it looked forward to working with him to take our multi-faceted bilateral relationship forward.
Eric Garcetti, close to US President Joe Biden, will be the US ambassador to India. The Senate confirmed his nomination, clearing the way for filling the top diplomatic post that has been vacant for nearly two years.
In this regard, Foreign Ministry spokesman Aridam Bagchi told reporters, “We welcome the confirmation of the nomination of Eric Garcetti as the US Ambassador to India. We look forward to working with them to take our multifaceted bilateral relationship forward. The Senate confirmed Eric Garcetti’s nomination by a vote of 52 to 42. Three Democratic members did not support Garcetti. However, seven members of the Republican Party supported him, making it possible for his nomination to be confirmed.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week approved Garcetti’s nomination by a vote of 13 to eight. Garcetti (52) is the former mayor of Los Angeles. US President Joe Biden first nominated him for the post of US Ambassador to India in July 2021.
However, in the first two years of Biden’s term as president, Garcetti’s nomination could not be approved because some lawmakers opposed his appointment. The previous US Ambassador to India, Kenneth Juster, resigned from this post in January 2021 after the change of power in the US.
