Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman kept US Secretary of State Antony Blinken waiting for a meeting for hours and then finally met him the next day. The meeting was part of Blinken’s efforts to garner support against Hamas attacks on Israel. Despite the reported postponement of the meeting and differing views on the escalation of the war, Blinken told reporters that his conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was very productive. At the meeting, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman talked about finding ways to stop the conflict and uphold international law, including lifting the Israeli blockade on Gaza, according to the Saudi state news agency, SPA.
Crown Prince Mohammed also told Blinken about Riyadh’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to defuse the crisis and establish peace, including talks with regional leaders including Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi. The Crown Prince further stressed the need for Palestinians to achieve their legitimate rights and ensure a just and lasting peace. Blinken, on the other hand, while talking to the press, said that Israel has the right to defend itself against these attacks by Hamas and do everything possible to ensure that this does not happen again.
Blinken told reporters that in every country I visited, there was a determination to ensure that this conflict did not spread. He said that they are using their influence, their relationships to ensure that this does not happen. Antony Blinken is on a regional tour following the incursion into Israel by Hamas fighters from the blockaded Gaza Strip on October 7. After Blinken’s meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, he said the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt would remain open.
