New Delhi (Uttam Hindu News): Meta-owned WhatsApp banned a record over 71 lakh rogue accounts in India in the month of September in compliance with the new IT Rules 2021. The company banned 71,11,000 accounts between September 1 and 30. WhatsApp said in its monthly compliance report that around 25,71,000 of these accounts were proactively banned before any reports from users.
WhatsApp banned accounts of 71 lakh Indians: The most popular messaging platform, which has over 50 crore users in the country, received a record 10,442 complaint reports in the country in September, of which 85 were actioned. “Accounts Actioned” refers to reports where WhatsApp took remedial action based on the report and taking action means either banning an account or resulting in reinstatement of a previously banned account.
According to the company, “This user-safety report includes details of user complaints received and actions taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to address abuse on our platform.” Additionally, the company received six orders from the Grievances Appellate Committee in the country in September and complied with the same.
To empower millions of Indian social media users, the Center has recently launched a Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) that looks into their concerns regarding content and other issues. The newly formed panel, a step towards strengthening the country’s digital laws to rein in Big Tech companies, will look into appeals made by users against decisions of social media platforms.
