WhatsApp banned over 67 lakh bad accounts in India in January

New Delhi: Meta-owned WhatsApp banned over 67 lakh rogue accounts in India in the month of January in compliance with the new IT Rules 2021. Between January 1 and 31, the company banned ‘67,28,000 accounts’. WhatsApp said in its monthly compliance report that around 13,58,000 of these accounts were proactively banned before any reports from users. The most popular messaging platform, which has over 50 crore users in the country, received a record 14,828 complaint reports in the country in January and a record ‘action’ was 10.
‘Accounts suspended’ refers to reports where WhatsApp took remedial action based on the report and taking action meant either banning an account or resulting in reinstatement of a previously banned account. “We have assembled a team of experts in engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and law enforcement to build security features and controls between end-to-end encrypted messaging services to prevent and combat abuse,” WhatsApp said in a statement. ‘ WhatsApp had banned more than 69 lakh bad accounts in the country in December last year.
