Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has stressed the need to fully implement the India-backed 13th amendment to the constitution to provide political autonomy to minority Tamils in the country. Wickremesinghe, while addressing an all-party meeting on Thursday, also said that if anyone opposed the full implementation of 13A, Parliament should take steps to scrap the law. The 13A amendment to the constitution provides for decentralization of power to the Tamil community in Sri Lanka.
India has been pushing Sri Lanka to implement the 13A amendment brought after the 1987 India-Sri Lanka accord. Wickremesinghe, who assumed office last year amid an unprecedented economic crisis and political turmoil in the country, said that as the head of state it was his duty to enforce existing laws. Wickremesinghe said, as the President, I am bound to implement the existing law of the land.
He said that 13A will be fully implemented on the same ground as it is already a part of the country’s constitution. If not, Parliament should take steps to scrap 13A, he said. The all-party meeting took place just after the visit of Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Jaishankar had stressed that India wanted 13A to be fully implemented.
