But, recently this free encyclopedia has been banned in Pakistan. If reports are to be believed, PTA had issued a press release a few days ago asking them to remove some controversial material from the platform. But, Wikipedia did not do this.
Blocked Wikipedia
Pakistan has ‘blocked’ online Wikipedia after it refused to remove objectionable or blasphemous content. The Telecom Authority of the country gave this information. The action of blacklisting Wikipedia has come at a time when the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had interrupted and slowed down Wikipedia’s service for 48 hours a few days ago.

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia, created and edited by people from all over the world. It is operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. PTA spokesperson Malahat Obaid said the ban was mainly imposed for non-compliance of orders. The spokesperson said- If Wikipedia removes material that the regulatory authority has identified as religiously sensitive material, then this decision can be reconsidered. The PTA spokesperson had earlier said that a notice was issued to Wikipedia directing it to block/remove the said content. He was also given an opportunity to appear. However, the forum neither complied with the direction to remove the blasphemous content nor appeared before the authority. Wikipedia’s services were interrupted and slowed down for 48 hours due to willful non-compliance with PTA instructions.
Restricted access to free knowledge
The Wikimedia Foundation said – it does not decide what content to include on Wikipedia or how to keep that content. It states that this is by design, in which many people work on the content of the article and ensure that the content should be on the site, resulting in better, unbiased content. Wikimedia said – As of February 3, our internal traffic reports indicate that Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects are unreachable in Pakistan. Wikimedia said that blocking Wikipedia in Pakistan would block access to free knowledge for the people of the world’s fifth most populous country. Due to this, people will be deprived of knowing the history and culture of Pakistan. Wikimedia said – We hope that the Government of Pakistan will continue to join the Wikimedia Foundation in its commitment to knowledge as a human right and will immediately restore access to Wikipedia and Wikimedia’s projects, so that the people of Pakistan can continue to gain knowledge with the world And keep sharing.
Facebook and YouTube were blocked
In Pakistan, the big social media company Facebook and YouTube were previously ‘blocked’ for blasphemous content. In December 2020, the PTA issued notices to Wikipedia and Google Inc for “religiously sensitive” content and the country had ‘blocked’ YouTube from 2012 to 2016. Pakistan has blocked video-sharing app TikTok several times in recent years for failing to stop it from posting “obscene” and “objectionable” content.
