The official said Tesla could apply for support measures under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for the vehicle or advanced chemistry cell. Government has already introduced PLI scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery storage with an outlay of Rs 18,100 crore.

New Delhi. The government has no plans to introduce any separate policy to encourage American electric car maker Tesla. A government official gave this information. Apart from this, a PLI scheme of Rs 26,058 crore has been brought for the vehicle, vehicle components and drone industry.

The official said, “We have told Tesla that it can also apply under the policies which are already in place for everyone. He is welcome. Usually the policies are the same for all. The government cannot make a separate policy for a company. In such a situation, there is no plan to treat them specially. ”The official said that representatives of Panasonic, the largest supplier of batteries to Tesla, have met us. ”They have said they want to make batteries. We have suggested them to apply under PLI ACC battery.” The government last week called for fresh bids under the PLI scheme for manufacturing 20 gigawatt-hour (GWh) advanced chemistry cells.

Tesla representatives visited the country last month to meet officials from various ministries, including the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. America’s electric car maker has demanded a cut in import duty on electric vehicles in India by 2021. Currently, cars imported as a completely built unit (CBU) attract a customs duty of 60 to 100 per cent depending on the engine size and cost, insurance and freight (CIF) value. Elon Musk, head of the world’s largest electric car company Tesla Inc, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York last month. After meeting the Prime Minister, Musk had said that he plans to visit India in 2024.
