MELBOURNE: World AIDS Day on December 1 is an opportunity to reflect on the tremendous progress made in HIV prevention and treatment, but a cure for the virus that 39 million people currently live with remains unclear. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV stops the virus from replicating, keeps people from getting sick, and prevents a person with HIV from infecting others. Treatment of people suffering from HIV should continue throughout their life.
ART cannot cure HIV because the virus can hide: It may become latent and inactive, a condition known as latent infection. Once a person stops treatment the virus becomes active again and starts replicating.
However, researchers are making significant progress toward a cure for HIV based on advances in cancer treatment, gene editing, and mRNA-based technology.
Scientists globally are developing and testing interventions that can specifically deal with latent virus, with the ultimate goal of achieving virus-free control after stopping antiviral treatment.
