Graveyard buried under 100 feet
The cemetery is found inside a cave where humans lived in the Stone Age. It is buried in the ground about 30 meters or 100 feet. This research has not been published yet and will be released in eLife in the coming days. Scientists have written, ‘This cemetery is enough to tell that there was an intervention of mankind even at least one million years ago and is the oldest evidence recorded in the record. The findings the scientists have drawn challenge the current understanding of human evolution. It is generally believed that humans with large brains were needed to perform complex activities such as the burial of the dead.

Earlier, the oldest cemetery of mankind was found in Middle East and Africa and that too was about one lakh years old. However, the research of the team led by scientist Berger has often been in controversy. He recently dated one of his finds to at least 200,000 BC. Berger, who lives in America, said, ‘Homo naledi tells us that we are not that special.’ Homo naledi was the form of human civilization that is considered to be the link between apes and modern humans. It is said that his brain was the size of an orange. Their length was also about 1.5 meters i.e. 5 feet only.

In the year 2013, it was Berger who discovered Homo naledi. This discovery helped to dispel the notion that humans evolved along a straight line. The species is named after the ‘Rising Star’ cave, where human bones were first found in 2013. “There’s a lot more to come,” said Rick Potts, director of the Smithsonian’s Human Origins Program. Although he was not a part of this research.
