Get rid of anger with simple and effective method

A research group in Japan has discovered a simple, yet effective solution to help reduce the feeling of anger. According to this research group, instead of giving our reaction when we get angry over a negative event, writing it on paper and then tearing it into pieces and throwing it away can reduce our anger. This research is important because controlling anger at home and at work can reduce negative consequences in our jobs and personal lives. The findings of this study have recently been published in Scientific Reports. The results just published are the culmination of years of research on the relationship between the written word and reduction in anger. The research builds on work that has shown how interacting with physical objects can regulate a person’s mood. However, many anger management techniques already exist to reduce or remove anger, which are advised to be adopted by experts. But unfortunately, many such techniques clearly lack empirical research support.

Even scientists are surprised by the findings

Nobuyuki Kawai, the lead author of this report, says that he had hoped that his method would suppress anger to some extent. But he was surprised to see the anger completely gone. Kawai is a professor of cognitive science at the Graduate School of Informatics, Nagoya University. Kawai’s graduate student Yuta Kanaya was also with him in this research.

Similarity to Japanese tradition Hakidashisar

The process that Japanese scientists have discovered to reduce anger is similar to the Japanese cultural tradition ‘Hakidashisar’. In this tradition, people write their negative thoughts on a plate and then destroy it. Hakidashisar is an annual festival in Japan where people break small discs representing things that make them angry. Hakidashisar is made up of two words – Hakidashi and Sara – where Hakidashi refers to purifying or spitting something, while Sara refers to a dish or plate. The origin place of this tradition is considered to be Hiyoshi Temple in Kiyosu city of Aichi province of Japan.
