Washington: The White House said on Tuesday that Chinese President Xi Jinping sees in Russia and its President Vladimir Putin an opportunity to counter the influence of the US and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the world. The statement by John Kirby, National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications at the White House, came at a time when Putin is hosting the Chinese president in Russia.
Kirby said in his daily press conference, “I think you have seen that these two countries (China and Russia) are coming closer in the last few years. I wouldn’t call it an alliance… It’s like a marriage of agreement, at least that’s how I feel. President Xi sees in Russia and President Putin the possibility of countering US influence and NATO influence on the continent and in the world.
“President Putin sees a potential supporter in President Xi,” he said. This man doesn’t have many friends internationally. He can only hope from them. What he wants to do, he definitely needs the support of President Xi…. Referring to Putin and Xi’s meeting, Kirby said that on Ukraine both sides have just said that the purposes and principles of the UN Charter must be followed and international law must be respected.
He said, “We agree to this. According to the UN Charter, Russia must withdraw from the internal territory of Ukraine, which is the territory of another UN country it has invaded. In response to another question, Kibri said that the US does not think that China has abandoned the idea of providing lethal weapons to Russia, but it is not going down that path right now. There is no indication that China is preparing to provide deadly weapons to Russia in the coming days.
