Various factions in war-torn Yemen began talks on Saturday to implement a UN-brokered prisoner swap deal. The United Nations gave this information. Talks between Yemen’s government and the Houthi rebels, recognized by the international community, are taking place in Switzerland. The dialogue is co-chaired by UN Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
According to a statement released by the United Nations, Grundberg appealed to both sides to “serious talks and agree to release as many prisoners as possible in the upcoming discussions”. The situation took a turn for the worse when Iran-backed Houthi rebels took control of the capital Sanaa and much of the country’s north. Months after the incident, Saudi Arabia launched a military intervention to restore a government recognized by the international community.
