Tounan Flower Market in Khunming, the capital of Yunnan province in southwest China, is China’s only national flower trading market. It houses the Khunming International Flower Auction Centre, the largest flower auction center in Asia and the second largest in the world. More than 100 categories and 1,600 varieties of flowers come to the market here every day.
The annual production of flowers in Yunnan province is 19 billion flower stems. If it were distributed throughout the world, each person could receive three flowers. Wang Ning, secretary of the CPC Committee of this province, said in an interview with CGTN reporter that the auction transaction model of Yunnan flower market is very mature, the best flowers should be taken by the best people.
He said that when it comes to flowers, we Yunnan people feel very proud. There is a huge amount of flower trading here every day, and the way of trading is exactly like the stock market, which is very unique. Vendors bring flowers, and there are dozens or hundreds of buyers. This specific trading model has been running successfully for over a decade.
Asked about the logic behind this auction-style business, Wang Ning explained that the aim is to ensure that the best buyers can get their hands on the flowers. Furthermore, he stressed the efficiency of the logistics system, allowing flowers to be traded overnight to reach destinations such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, even gracing people’s dinner tables by the next day.
Wang Ning, secretary of the CPC Committee of Yunnan Province, proudly shared that Yunnan ranks second globally in flower production, behind only Amsterdam in the Netherlands, the world’s largest flower producer. Every year Yunnan produces 19 billion flower stems, which is an average of about three stems per person worldwide. This is so incredible.
