Pekanbaru. Eleven people have died and nine others are still missing after a boat capsized in western Indonesia. At least 78 people were on board the boat. Nyoman Siddhakarya, head of the Pekanbaru search and rescue agency, said rescue workers had so far recovered 11 bodies, most of them women and children. So far 58 people have been rescued. Many of these people fainted after being in the water for hours. Footage broadcast on local television showed people standing on an overturned speedboat trying to reach the fishing boat.
Siddhakarya said that there were 72 passengers and six crew members in ‘Evelyn Calista 01’. Most of the people were returning from their hometowns to celebrate the Eid al-Fitr holiday with family members. The boat capsized on Thursday afternoon, about three hours after leaving a port in Tembilahan town of Indragiri Hilir regency in Riau province.
