United Nations. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday unanimously approved a resolution calling on Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers to swiftly lift the harsh restrictions imposed on women and girls in the country. Since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, women have been banned from pursuing higher education, working and being alone in public places. The Security Council condemned the Taliban ban on women working for the United Nations, and the resolution described the decision as “unprecedented in the history of the United Nations”.
The Taliban, upon seizing power following the withdrawal of US and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces from Afghanistan in August 2021, promised that their rule would be milder than their first term from 1996 to 2001, but the Taliban Leaders are gradually imposing harsher Sharia law on women and girls, drawing international condemnation. The UN resolution expresses “deep concern over the growing abuses of human rights and fundamental freedoms of women and girls in Afghanistan by the Taliban” and reaffirms their “vital role” in Afghan society.
