Jakarta. The death toll in a massive fire at a fuel storage depot in the Indonesian capital Jakarta has risen to 19 and three people are still missing. Rescuers and firefighters continued to search for the missing people on Sunday as well. The fuel storage depot, operated by state oil and gas company Pertamina, is located near a densely populated area in the Tanah Merah area of North Jakarta. It supplies 25 percent of Indonesia’s fuel needs. Fire officials said at least 260 firefighters and 52 fire engines were deployed to douse the blaze.
National police chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo said that according to preliminary investigations, the depot received fuel from the Balongan refinery in Pertamina in West Java province and a technical problem related to excessive pressure at the time caused the fire. People living near the depot said they smelled a strong smell of gasoline, which caused some people to vomit, and a massive explosion occurred at around 8 pm.
Officials said that the number of people who lost their lives due to the fire has increased to 19. Rescuers are still searching for three people who are reported missing and some 35 people are being treated in five hospitals. The condition of some of these people is serious. National police chief Listio Sigit Prabowo said more than 1,300 people had been displaced.
