Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the first Hindu temple of Abu Dhabi amid chanting of mantras in the presence of officials of the Swaminarayan sect. Dressed in light pink silk kurta-pajama, sleeveless jacket and patka, the Prime Minister participated in the puja rituals at the inauguration ceremony of the temple. The Prime Minister also participated in the ‘Global Aarti’ which was organized simultaneously by Bochasan-based Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) in more than 1200 temples of the Swaminarayan sect across the world.
Hindu temple built on 27 acres of land
Located near Al Rahba on Dubai-Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Highway, this Hindu temple built by Bochasan resident Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) is built on about 27 acres of land.
More than 300 sensors have been installed in the temple, prepared at a cost of Rs 700 crore.

No metal has been used in the construction of the temple and fly ash (ash from coal-based power plants) has been used to fill the foundation. The sacred water of Ganga and Yamuna is flowing on both sides of the temple, which has been brought from India in big containers. According to the temple authorities, a ghat-shaped amphitheater has been built on the side where the waters of the Ganga flow.
Marble carving made from more than 25000 stone pieces
The façade of the temple features marble carvings carved out of sandstone, made from over 25,000 stone pieces by skilled artisans from Rajasthan and Gujarat. A large quantity of pink sandstone has been brought to Abu Dhabi from northern Rajasthan for the temple. More than two lakh cubic feet of ‘holy’ stone has been brought in more than 700 containers for the construction of the temple.
UAE donated land for the temple
The construction work of this temple is going on since 2019. The land for the temple has been donated by the United Arab Emirates. There are three more Hindu temples in the UAE which are located in Dubai. Spread over a large area with amazing architecture and carvings, the BAPS temple will be the largest temple in the Gulf region.
The seven pinnacles of the temple represent the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates.

To give equal representation to the host country, animals that hold important places in Indian mythology such as elephants, camels and lions, as well as the UAE’s national bird, the eagle, have also been included in the design of the temple.

Apart from 15 stories of India including Ramayana and Mahabharata, the stories of Maya, Aztec, Egyptian, Arabic, European, Chinese and African civilizations are also depicted in the temple. ‘Dome of Peace’ and ‘Dome of Harmony’ have also been built in the temple.
