Washington (Uttam Hindu News): US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced that it will temporarily suspend operations at the international railway crossing bridges in Eagle Pass and El Paso, Texas, starting Monday due to the continued increase in migrant crossings.
In a statement on Sunday, CBP said the suspension, effective from 8 a.m. Monday (local time), is to redirect personnel to assist U.S. Border Patrol with detaining migrants.
The agency said it is continuing to increase all available resources to safely process migrants in response to the increased level of migrant encounters at the southwest border by smugglers who use disinformation to prey on vulnerable individuals.
After seeing the recent resurgence of smuggling organizations transporting migrants through Mexico via freight trains, CBP is taking additional actions to increase personnel and address this related matter, including partnering with Mexican authorities .
“We continue to adjust our operational plans to maximize enforcement efforts against noncitizens who do not use lawful pathways or processes and who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States.” .
Earlier on Sunday, border officials apprehended about 3,000 migrants in Del Rio, Texas, and about 1,300 in El Paso, CNN quoted a Homeland Security official as saying.
In the first 14 days of December, more than 37 thousand migrants were apprehended in the Tucson Border Patrol sector alone. Last month, border officials apprehended about 192,000 migrants, a 2 percent increase from 188,000 migrants in October.
