YEREVAN: Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that Azerbaijan and Armenia will enter into a non-aggression pact if the process of signing a peace treaty between the parties goes ahead. “We proposed to Azerbaijan demilitarization of the border, a mechanism for mutual arms control and the signing of a non-aggression pact, but signing the peace treaty will take longer than expected,” Mr Pashinyan said.
He said that Armenia has no claim on any territory other than its sovereign territory and no one can have any claim on Armenia’s territory. It is noteworthy that Armenia and Azerbaijan have started discussions on a future peace treaty in 2022 with the mediation of Russia, the European Union and the United States. Mr Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev have said a peace treaty could be signed by the end of 2023, but no final agreement has yet been reached.
It is noteworthy that in September 2023, Azerbaijan took control of the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is a region predominantly populated by Armenians. Due to an intense attack almost all the inhabitants of the region were forced to flee to Armenia.
