Officials gave this information on Sunday. Local police officer Gunardi Mundu said torrential rains in the Tana Toraja district of South Sulawesi province on Saturday night triggered landslides in nearby hills. A family function was taking place in one of the houses affected by the landslide. Mundu said dozens of soldiers, policemen and volunteers were deployed in search operations to rescue people in remote mountain villages.
Early on Sunday, rescue workers managed to pull out alive two injured people, including an eight-year-old girl. All the injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital. National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said rescue workers had recovered at least 11 bodies in Makale village and three in South Makale by Sunday afternoon and the search for three others, including a three-year-old girl, was still ongoing. There are many popular tourist destinations in Tana Toraja.
