Attock jail administration asked to provide medical facilities to Imran, allow him to meet family and friends

The Islamabad High Court on Saturday directed Attock Jail authorities to provide suitable medical facilities to former prime minister Imran Khan and allow him to meet his friends and family as per law. Dawn News quoted the court as saying, “He (the former prime minister) may also be provided with a prayer mat and an English version of the Quran.” Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chief Imran was convicted by a trial court on August 5 in the Toshakhana case for concealing details of state gifts.

The lower court ordered the Islamabad police chief to arrest Imran, but he was arrested by the Lahore police instead. The court had ordered that the superintendent of Adiala jail would receive Imran, but the former prime minister was taken to Attock jail. The Punjab Jail Department provided ‘B’ class facilities to the former Prime Minister. However, his lawyers have claimed that he was kept in disturbing conditions and given ‘C’ category prison facilities. Subsequently, Imran moved the High Court with a request to be shifted from Attock Jail to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail under better facilities. Imran sought permission to allow his legal team, family members, doctor Faisal Sultan and political associates to visit the jail regularly to visit him. Lawyers of the former prime minister’s party on Friday raised serious apprehensions about his security in the Attock jail.

In the last hearing, the court had reserved its verdict on the plea. Chief Justice Amir Farooq had said that he would issue an appropriate order on this. The court order said that the former Prime Minister should be given all the facilities he is entitled to under the Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978. Apart from this, the Islamabad High Court has also summoned a complete record against Imran in the Toshakhana case.
