Washington: Six construction workers missing after a bridge collapsed in Baltimore, US, are now presumed dead and the US Coast Guard has suspended search and rescue operations. Citing the cold water temperatures and harsh sea conditions, Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said during a news conference that it was likely the missing would be dead.
It is noteworthy that a large Singapore-flagged container ship collided with the 2.6 kilometer long Francis Scott Key Bridge at around 1:30 am local time on Tuesday. The six persons who went missing were all road maintenance workers and were reportedly repairing potholes when the bridge collapsed. Two other people were earlier rescued from the Patapsco River, one of whom is in critical condition, according to local officials.
US President Joe Biden said Tuesday he wants the federal government to pay for the bridge’s reconstruction. The bridge was opened to traffic in 1977 and approximately 115 lakh vehicles cross it every year. Joe Biden said, we will work with our colleagues in Congress to ensure that the state gets the necessary support.
