A major bridge collapsed after a cargo ship crashed into it in the US city of Baltimore on Tuesday morning, causing cars and people to fall into the river below. According to news agency Reuters, Baltimore officials are claiming that at least eight people fell into the Patapsco River after the 2.57 km long Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed into the water. However, the actual number of people who fell into the water is not clear as search and rescue operations are ongoing. The container ship named Dali, which collided with the bridge and crashed, had 22 crew members on board. All the crew members were Indians and they were safe.
At 1.27 a.m., the cargo ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, one of the busiest in the port city of Maryland. A video of the incident was shared widely on social media, showing the moment the 3 km long bridge collapsed. According to the video on X, it appears that the ship hit a support of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the roadway to break in several places and fall into the water. At the time of the collision, a construction crew was repairing potholes on the bridge. At least eight people fell into the cold water, two of whom were rescued. While one of them was unhurt, reports say the other person is seriously injured.
According to Maryland Governor Wes Moore, the crew of the cargo ship had informed authorities about the electrical problem before the accident, which likely saved many lives. CNN quoted Moore as saying that we are grateful that between May Day and the accident, we had officers who were able to stop the flow of traffic, so more cars were not on the bridge.
