Bangladesh: BNP calls for 48-hour general strike against January 7 elections

Bangladesh’s main opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday called for a 48-hour nationwide general strike from Saturday to protest against the general elections to be held on January 7. Through the strike, BNP aims to garner support for its non-cooperation movement against the Awami Party-led government. It has urged people not to pay taxes and other bills to emphasize its demand for a non-party interim government to oversee elections by amending the country’s constitution. This strike will end at 6 am on Monday.

Through the strike, the BNP is also demanding the release of its other leaders, including party general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Ameer Khasru Mahmood Chowdhury, who were arrested on charges of violence. Police have arrested thousands of opposition activists and figures, and at least 16 people have been killed and thousands injured in the past three months, according to a human rights monitor, with dozens of vehicles including buses and trucks damaged in the political violence.
