Britain’s statistics monitoring body is looking into claims related to settlement of asylum cases.

Britain’s statistics watchdog said on Thursday it was following the government’s recent announcement that it had met Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s target of clearing the country’s backlog of asylum cases by the end of 2023. The opposition has strongly refuted the government’s claim. Earlier this week, Britain’s Home Office said 112,000 asylum-seeking cases were processed last year, exceeding Sunak’s initial target of 92,000 applications pending at the end of 2022. However, the opposition Labor Party objected to this and accused the government of “misleading” the public.
It has now come to light that a formal complaint is likely to be lodged with the Office of Statistics Regulation (OSR). An OSR spokesperson said, “The Office for Statistics Regulation confirms that it is looking at government announcements about pending asylum cases.” OSR can seek additional information from the Home Office, but does not have the power to provide the data. Has no power to compel.
The Home Office claimed in a statement on Tuesday that fundamental changes to the decision-making process and increased efficiency had resulted in faster decisions in a year resulting in more asylum cases being dealt with. However, the opposition party said that the government’s claim is not true. “Sunak claims he has dealt with the backlog of asylum cases,” Labor Party leader Yvette Cooper said in a post on social media. it is not true. Pending inheritance cases were also not resolved.
