New York (Uttam Hindu News): A Manhattan federal jury has ordered former US President Donald Trump to pay $83.3 million (₹692 crore) to author E. Jean Carroll for defamatory statements she made against him in 2019. The jury of two women and seven men on Friday ordered Trump to pay Carroll $11 million to restore his reputation, $7.3 million in other damages and $65 million in punitive damages, Xinhua news agency reported. Trump left the court minutes before the verdict and was not in the room when the jury returned. On a Truth Social post, Trump called the verdict “ridiculous” and said he would appeal the decision. Friday’s ruling marked the second time Carroll won damages from Trump in a lawsuit.
Last May, a separate Manhattan federal jury awarded Carroll $5 million in damages. They found that Trump sexually assaulted Carroll and then made public statements in 2022 vilifying her and denying the allegations. Carroll, a former magazine columnist, alleged that Trump raped her at a department store in the mid-1990s and later defamed her.
