Cairo, 17 December (HS). At least 60 people, including women and children, died after a boat carrying migrants heading to Europe capsized off the Libyan coast. The United Nations Migration Agency gave this information.
According to United Nations officials, this is the latest incident of boat capsizing in this part of the Mediterranean Sea on the night of Thursday-Friday. Thousands of people have died so far who wanted to go to Europe illegally in search of a better life.
The boat carrying 86 migrants capsized near the Libyan city of Juwara due to strong waves and 61 people drowned, the UN’s International Organization for Migration said in a statement. The EU border agency said in a statement on Sunday that its aircraft detected a partially dismantled rubber boat near Libya on Thursday evening.
People were in serious danger due to adverse weather, the Frontex agency said, with waves reaching a height of 2.5 metres.
Alarm Phone, a hotline for migrants in distress, said in a tweet that some migrants on board the boat informed authorities, including volunteer groups and the Libyan coast guard, about the incident. A Libyan coast guard spokesman was not immediately available for comment. More than 2,250 people have died on the Central European route this year, UN agency spokesman Flavio Di Giacomo said.
