BRI under CPEC by China in Pakistan is in danger due to increased terrorist attacks

Islamabad: Terrorist attacks have increased in West Pakistan and this news is not good for this country. After the spurt in terrorist activities, experts are beginning to believe that there is a threat to the expansion of China’s Dream Project Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in the country. The future of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is a part of the BRI, seems to be in the dark. It is also true that Chinese companies are learning how to deal with the increase in violence. Interestingly, Pakistan is organizing ongoing celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of CPEC.
CPEC completes 10 years
The July attacks by insurgents of the Pakistani Taliban movement, or TTP, have raised concerns amid celebrations to mark 10 years of CPEC. The attacks have spread to areas in Balochistan province that are considered important for boosting connectivity between Xinjiang and the Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea. Since the start of work on the CPEC in 2016, Chinese companies have built the infrastructure needed for power generation and logistics worth more than $25 billion. The total cost of the projects to be completed by 2030 is estimated to be $62 billion.

On 12 July, a TTP suicide squad unsuccessfully attempted to attack a checkpoint in the small town of Zhob town. Nine Pakistani soldiers were killed in this attempt. A very important road is being constructed at this place. After the completion of these roads, a new and easy way to reach Gwadar will be opened. On the same day of this attack, three more Pakistani soldiers were killed in fighting with TTP terrorists in Sui area of Balochistan. After this, the security officials came to the conclusion that the Pakistani Taliban was getting help from the ethnic Baloch separatists. Since 2004, separatists from Balochistan have been fighting the country’s security forces.

Afrasiab Khattak, a former member of the Senate of Pakistan, said that the Zhob attack was linked to the CPEC. This is the reason that Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir visited Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, and gave his reaction to the attack. They issued a statement saying that ‘foreign’ nationals were involved in the attack. Pakistan’s army high command later blamed the attacks on TTP rebels. Along with this, he also said that TTP terrorists have got safe haven in Afghanistan and they are roaming freely. At the same time, he said that the Taliban regime should fulfill its promise to stop the terrorists.

TTP became more powerful
Khattak said that the Taliban regime every time refuses to acknowledge that the TTP is part of the Taliban and that it is now armed with weapons left by US forces in Afghanistan. It is because of this that TTP has become strong again today. On 30 July, a suicide attack occurred at a rally of the pro-Afghan Taliban Islamic Party in the Bajaur tribal district. The Afghan Taliban and TTP condemned the attack while ISIS-K claimed responsibility. At least 54 people have died in the attack.
