baltimore: A container ship collided with a major bridge in Baltimore, Maryland in the US, causing the bridge to collapse and several vehicles falling into the river. Rescue workers are searching for at least 7 people in the river. According to a video posted on social media platform X, the vessel collided with a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the bridge to collapse and fall into the water. The vessel caught fire and appeared to have sunk.
The bridge opened in 1977 and spans the Patapsco River, a vital thoroughfare and transportation hub for the Port of Baltimore as well as the East Coast. Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore Fire Department, said this is an emergency. He said that our focus right now is on rescuing people and taking them out of the water. He said that it appears that some stuff is hanging from the bridge. Cartwright said emergency personnel are searching for seven people who are believed to be in the river. According to him, it is too early to tell how many people have been affected.
