Nairobi. A bus was swept away by flood waters on a river bridge in northern Kenya, but 51 passengers were rescued safely. Officials gave this information on Tuesday. Tana River county commander Ali Ndima told The Associated Press that the bus was still stuck in the river about 30 meters from the bridge, although the water level was slowly receding. Ndima said that the bridge has currently been closed indefinitely. He said that the person violating the order will be arrested and a case will be registered against him.
He said that the police is busy searching for the bus driver, who decided to drive through the flood water without caring for the passengers. Police said some passengers managed to escape from the vehicle just before it sank while others climbed onto the roof of the bus. The incident occurred just hours after Kenya’s Roads Agency had announced the closure of another section of the bridge. Due to continuous heavy rains in this area, Tana River is flooded.
