A rescue operation is underway in Pakistan for eight people, including six children, who were trapped in a cable car hanging over a valley. According to media reports, at least eight people, including six school children, were trapped 900 feet in the air after the wire of a chairlift snapped in a mountainous area of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday. According to the Express Tribune newspaper report, the children were on their way to school when the incident took place around 8 am in Allai tehsil of Battagram. The incident occurred at around 07:00 local time (02:00 GMT).
According to Mufti Ghulamullah, president of Allai tehsil, chairlifts were run privately by locals for transportation across the river as there were no roads or bridges in the area. A chairlift at Battagram got stuck midway at a height of about 900 feet due to a break in its cable. Geo News, citing a statement by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), said that eight people, including 6 children, are trapped.
Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar ordered rescuers to focus on the “alarming” incident, saying he has directed authorities to ensure immediate rescue and evacuation of the eight people trapped in the chairlift. He also ordered “a safety inspection of all such private chairlifts and ensure that they are safe for operation and use”.
