Cannes Film Festival head Thierry Fremaux refutes actress Adele Haenel’s allegations

An open letter from Haenel was published last week in Telerama magazine, in which he said Cannes and other pillars of the French film industry were prepared to do anything to protect abusers.
Adele Haenel, one of France’s best actresses, announced her retirement from the French film industry. She accused Cannes and the French film industry of being too soft on “sexual assaulters”, prompting Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Fremaux to dismiss her criticism while addressing the media on Monday. An open letter from Haenel was published last week in Telerama magazine, in which he said Cannes and other pillars of the French film industry were prepared to do anything to protect abusers.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the film festival’s opening Tuesday with the premiere of Maven’s historical drama Jean du Barry starring Johnny Depp, Fremaux strongly disagreed with Haenel’s allegations. Fremaux said, no doubt, that for some reason he had to make that comment about the ear, which was clearly incorrect. In 2019, Haenel accused French director Christophe Ruggia of sexually abusing her since she was 12 years old. However, Ragiya denied the allegations. Since then, the actress has been vocally opposing the French film industry. She walked out of the 2020 Cesar Awards ceremony after Roman Polanski won the Best Director award.
