Syria’s President invited to COP28 climate talks to be held in Dubai

Syria’s civil war-ravaged President Bashar al-Assad has been invited to attend the COP28 climate talks in Dubai later this year. Fighting has been going on in the country for years over Assad’s rule. The Syrian president has been invited to climate talks as he attends an Arab League summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Friday. Protests against Assad’s regime were brutally crushed during the 2011 Arab Spring, leading to a civil war that led to regional conflict. About half a million people have died due to the civil war, while half of the country’s population has been displaced.

According to the news of Syria’s official news agency ‘Sana’, the leader of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has sent a letter of invitation to Assad. The agency published pictures of Assad reading the letter with an Emirati diplomat in Damascus. UAE had ended its relations with Assad. However, these have been gradually restored in recent years. When asked, the Emirati Office, which is organizing the upcoming climate conference, said in a statement that it is an important opportunity to bring the world together and advance progress towards keeping alive the goals and ambitions of the Paris Climate Agreement.

According to the statement, COP28 is committed to an inclusive COP process that produces transformative solutions and can only happen if all countries participate in the convention. The conference will be held at ‘Expo City’ in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December.
