The US on Thursday said it is concerned about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) being notified in India and is closely monitoring its implementation.

“We are concerned about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act notification issued on March 11,” US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said at his daily press conference.

“We are keeping a close eye on how this act will be implemented,” Miller said in response to a question. Respect for religious freedom and equal treatment of all communities under the law are fundamental democratic principles.

The Indian government on Monday enacted the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019, paving the way for granting citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014.

The government has also said that Indian Muslims do not need to worry about the CAA as this law has nothing to do with Indian Muslims and they have the same rights as their counterpart Hindu Indian citizens. The Government of India has said that the purpose of CAA is to give citizenship and because of this no citizen of the country will lose his citizenship.
