Maldivian local media reported that the main opposition party in the Maldives, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which has a majority in Parliament, has gathered enough signatures to table an impeachment motion against Muizzoo. The Sun quoted an MDP lawmaker as saying that the party has collected signatures for an impeachment motion in partnership with the Democrats. Meanwhile, Adhaadhoo, an online news portal in the Maldives, reported that 34 members, including representatives of both the MDP and the Democrats, have given their support to the motion to impeach the President, which was disrupted due to chaos in the Maldives Parliament yesterday. The Sun further reported that the MDP has decided that it will refuse to sanction Interior Minister Ali Ihussan and Defense Minister Mohammed Ghassan Maumoun if government lawmakers continue to disrupt parliament.

This is not the first time that Muizzu had to face the wrath of the opposition. After assuming office, the pro-China leader formally requested India to withdraw its military personnel from the country. Muizzoo claimed that the people of Maldives have given him a strong mandate to make this request to New Delhi. He has also put dozens of agreements signed by Male with New Delhi in recent years under the microscope. Muizzu also recently allowed a spy ship from China to dock in Male. The Maldivian government said in a statement that China has made a diplomatic request for the rotation and replenishment of personnel. It added that the island nation had always been a welcome destination for Allied ships. The statement said the Ministry of External Affairs wishes to inform that a diplomatic request was made by the Government of China to the Government of Maldives for the necessary clearance to make the port call.

Sri Lanka refused to allow the ship to stop at one of its ports. The ship is expected to land in Male on 5 February. India has said it is closely monitoring the Chinese vessel equipped with advanced surveillance equipment. According to defense sources there is no example of the ship carrying out any research activities within the Indian EEZ. The Indian Navy is aware of the presence of the ship and is monitoring its movements. A dispute also arose between the Maldives government and New Delhi after Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted pictures of his visit to Lakshadweep. Many people, including three ministers of the Muizzu government, made derogatory comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India on social media. Although the government suspended three ministers and distanced itself from any such comments, the damage has already been done with many in India calling for a boycott of the Maldives.
