Covid Update: Kovid no longer a global pandemic, World Health Organization downgrades health emergency – who declares covid-19 no longer a global health emergency

United Nations/Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday that COVID-19 no longer qualifies for a global emergency, marking a symbolic end to the devastating coronavirus pandemic. Due to this epidemic, lockdown was imposed in various countries of the world at one time, which affected the economies worldwide and at least 7 million people died. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva that he made the decision following the recommendation of the UN agency’s emergency committee. The 15th meeting of the committee was held on Thursday.

Covid is no longer a global emergency

“I have accepted that advice. Therefore, with great hope, I declare the end of COVID-19 as a global health emergency,” he said. He, however, cautioned that declaring COVID-19 no longer a global health emergency does not mean that the pandemic as a global health threat is over. Ghebreyesus said that one person died every three minutes due to Kovid-19 last week and these are the only figures of death that we know about.

Members of the International Health Regulation (2005) (IHR) Emergency Committee noted a declining trend in COVID-19 deaths, a decline in COVID-19 related hospitalizations and intensive care unit admissions, and a population increase for SARS-CoV-2. Highlighting the high level of immunity, this stance of the Committee has been maintained in the last few months.

WHO said- Kovid is now a health problem

WHO said, “Acknowledging the remaining uncertainties stemming from the potential evolution of SARS-CoV-2, they advised that it is time to move towards long-term management of the COVID-19 pandemic.” It added that its Director General agrees with the advice given by the committee with regard to the current COVID-19 pandemic. They determined that COVID-19 is an established and ongoing health problem that is no longer a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

On January 30, 2020, the United Nations Health Agency first declared the corona virus an international emergency. Its committee had maintained this position in its meetings held every three months. The WHO chief said that at least 7 million people died in the pandemic. He said the true figure is “likely” closer to 20 million deaths – nearly three times the official estimate.

Covid first emerged in China in 2019

COVID-19 first emerged in 2019 in the city of Wuhan in China and has engulfed the world as a pandemic. More than three years later, the virus has caused an estimated 764 million cases of infection globally and nearly five billion people have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
