President Wickremesinghe calls for solidarity to make Sri Lanka a prosperous nation

President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Friday called on Sri Lankans to unite to build a prosperous country as they are facing “difficult times” due to an unprecedented economic crisis. On the occasion of ‘Vesak Poya Day’, Wickremesinghe, who is also the finance minister of the cash-strapped country, said that the ever-relevant philosophy of Mahatma Buddha is a source of satisfaction. It is noteworthy that in Sri Lanka, the birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana of Mahatma Buddha is celebrated as ‘Vesak Poya Day’. All these three incidents in the life of Mahatma Buddha took place on the full moon day of Vaishakh month.

The President, in his message to the nation on the occasion, called upon the people to rise above their differences and unite in these ‘difficult times’. “At this time when the country is passing through an unprecedented economic crisis, the ever-relevant Buddha’s philosophy is comforting,” he said. “Therefore, in this time of crisis, above all differences, Wickremesinghe said It is imperative to rise up and embrace the message of unity and service propounded by Buddha, to deal with the crises that come with leading a normal life. Using the President’s privilege on the occasion, pardoned 988 prisoners, who were imprisoned for minor crimes.

According to the official newspaper ‘Daily News’, the Indian High Commission in Colombo has organized a special exhibition on India’s rich Buddhist heritage. Wickremesinghe visited the special exhibition organized as part of the ‘Vesak Festival’ along with Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay. Several senior cabinet ministers of Sri Lanka and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion. The festival was jointly organized by the President’s Secretariat, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Gangaramya Temple on Wednesday.
