Sri Lanka’s Election Commission said on Friday that it would announce a new date for the local bodies next week after holding talks with the relevant authorities. Earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered the government to release funds for conducting these elections. Commission chairman Nimal Panchihewa said that talks will be held next week with the Finance Minister, the government press and the police to announce the date of the local body elections. The Supreme Court on Friday gave an interim order to the Finance Minister to release the amount allocated in the 2023 government budget to conduct this election. The MP from the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya had filed a fundamental rights petition in the apex court alleging that government officials were not providing necessary funds to conduct the elections.
