Deadliest attack on Russian soil, shelling in Belgrade city, 21 people including three children killed

According to the information, at least 21 people, including three children, were killed and 110 others were injured in shelling in Russia’s border city of Belgrad on Saturday. Local officials gave this information. The attack is one of the deadliest attacks on Russian soil since Russia invaded Ukraine 22 months ago. Russian authorities have blamed Ukraine for this attack. A day before the attack in Belgrade, Russia had carried out 18-hour air strikes on Ukraine, in which 41 civilians were killed.

Moscow’s military launched 122 missiles and dozens of drone strikes into Ukraine on Friday, in what an Air Force official described as the biggest air strike of the war. After this, Belgrad Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that at least 21 people, including three children, were killed and 110 people were injured in the attack on Belgrad. In images of Belgrade available on social media, burning cars and black smoke billowing from damaged buildings can be seen and air raid sirens can be heard.

During the shelling in Belgrade, a public ‘ice rink’ (a closed area where ice sheets are arranged for skating) located in the center of the city was also targeted. There have been attacks in the city before, but this type of shelling has rarely taken place in broad daylight and such large numbers of people have not been killed in previous attacks.

Regarding the ongoing war with Ukraine, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had identified the munition used in the attack as an Olkha Missal equipped with a Czech (Republic)-made Vampire rocket and ammunition. The ministry has not given any additional information. The Associated Press (AP) does not confirm these claims. This crime will not go unpunished, the ministry said in a statement released on social media. Earlier on Saturday, Russian officials had reported shooting down 32 Ukrainian drones in the airspace of Moscow, Bryansk, Oryol and Kursk regions of the country.

There have been continuous drone attacks on cities in western Russia since May and Russian officials blame Ukraine for this. Ukrainian authorities have never claimed responsibility for the attacks on Russian territory and the Crimean Peninsula, but airstrikes against Russia have followed major attacks on Ukrainian cities.
