Lahaina. The number of people who lost their lives due to the fire in the forests of Maui in the US state of Hawaii has crossed 100. Rescue teams have intensified the search for more bodies in the surrounding areas. Governor Josh Green said the death toll had risen from 99 to 101. The US Department of Health and Human Services has deployed pathologists and technicians with equipment to identify the dead. A week after a fire ripped through historic downtown Lahaina, many victims have begun moving into vacated hotel rooms for displaced locals.
Maui County said in a statement Tuesday that rescue crews have searched about 32 percent of the area with sniffer dogs. According to Maui Police Chief John Pelletier, only three bodies have been identified. He appealed to the family members of the missing people to provide DNA samples. The governor warned that hundreds more bodies could be recovered. It is the deadliest wildfire in America in more than a century. The cause of the fire is yet to be known. President Joe Biden said Tuesday that he and First Lady Jill Biden would visit Hawaii “as soon as possible,” but added that he did not want their trip to hinder rescue operations.
