Warsaw. Centrist Party leader Donald Tusk became the Prime Minister of Poland again after almost a decade after a vote in the Parliament on Monday. Tusk, a former EU leader, served as President of the European Council from 2014 to 2019. He was the Prime Minister of Poland from 2007 to 2014.
The change of power is being considered crucial for the central European nation’s 38 million citizens, as a mass protest against the ‘Law and Justice Party’ led to a record voter turnout to replace a government that has destroyed its democratic norms. Was getting it done.
The ‘Law and Justice Party’ was in power in Poland since 2015.
The party was accused of increasing its power over the courts and judicial bodies. The European Union and others accused the ruling party of eroding the country’s judicial independence. During voting in the 460-seat lower house of Parliament, 248 votes were cast in support of Tusk and 201 MPs voted against him.
“Thank you, Poland, it’s really a wonderful day,” Tusk said in a brief speech after the victory. “Not just for me, but for everyone who believed deeply over these many years… that things would get better,” he said. Tusk will present his cabinet to parliament on Tuesday and must win a vote of confidence for the new government, after which he could be sworn in by President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday morning.
