Quito. Daniel Noboa (35), son of the country’s biggest businessman, won Ecuador’s presidential election on Sunday amid unprecedented violence. One candidate also died in the violence during the elections. Election officials said 96 percent of the votes had been counted, with Daniel Nabao getting 52.2 percent and Luis Gonzalez, a leftist lawyer and ally of exiled former President Rafael Correa, getting 47.8 percent. Noboa, 35, will lead Ecuador at a time when the country is grappling with unprecedented violence that has also left a presidential candidate dead.

Nationwide unrest began when violence erupted nearly three years ago, but it reached unimaginable levels after the August 9 assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. Daniel Noboa’s political career began in 2021, when he gained a seat in the National Assembly and chaired its Economic Development Commission.

Daniel Noboa, who was educated in the US, started a company at the age of 18 and then joined his father’s company ‘Noboa Corp’, where he held management positions in shipping, logistics and commercial sectors. His father, Alvaro Noboa, a businessman in bananas, Ecuador’s main crop, is the country’s richest man. Alvaro has also stood for presidential election five times, but he was not successful. Daniel Noboa and Gonzalez defeated six other candidates in the first round of elections on August 22 to advance to the decisive runoff.
