The American newspaper The Washington Post quoted General Manuel Iniguez, a deputy commander of Ecuador’s national police, as saying that 59-year-old Fernando Villavicencio was leaving a rally at a high school in Quito. At the same time bullets were fired at him several times. Immediately after the incident, Villavicencio was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead. General Manuel Iniguez said a police officer was also wounded in the attack. The gunmen also launched a grenade towards Villavicencio’s group. Although the grenade did not explode.
Villavicencio was a member of the National Assembly of Ecuador before it was dissolved in May. He was one of the leading candidates in the first round of voting on 20 August to succeed Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso. Ecuador’s police and interior ministry have not given further details of the murder.
