Islamabad: On the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Arif Alvi on Wednesday dissolved the National Assembly, the lower house of the Parliament, three days before the end of its five-year constitutional term. With this, the way has been paved for holding general elections in the country. The notification issued to dissolve the lower house said that the National Assembly has been dissolved under Article 58 of the Constitution. Shahbaz Sharif wrote a letter to the President recommending the dissolution of the National Assembly.

appointment of caretaker PM

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led coalition government could have stayed in power for two more days and wanted to dissolve parliament on August 11, but believes that former leader of jailed ex-prime minister Imran’s party President Alvi may refuse to immediately issue a notification to dissolve the lower house. Prime Minister Shehbaz late on Wednesday night sent a letter to President Alvi to dissolve the National Assembly, which would formally begin the process of appointing a caretaker prime minister, Geo News reported.

when will elections be held
Three days before the term of the Lower House of the Parliament ends, Prime Minister Shahbaz has sent an advice to President Alvi to dissolve it. President Alvi can either immediately issue a notification to dissolve the National Assembly or delay it for 48 hours. In case of premature dissolution of the National Assembly, the Election Commission of Pakistan will conduct elections within 90 days. Had the National Assembly completed its constitutional term, elections would have been held within 60 days.

Home Minister’s big gesture
On the other hand, Home Minister Rana Sanaullah said that there is a possibility of delay in holding general elections. He said in an interview to Geo News on Tuesday that 2023 is not an election year. Sanaullah said that after the census is notified, the delimitation process needs to be completed. He said that the caretaker government would complete the delimitation process fulfilling this constitutional requirement. The minister said the process would take 120 days.
