Upcoming travel to European countries is now going to be different for Americans after requirements were announced for US passport holders starting in 2024. However, EU officials have delayed the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) until 2025. As first reported, an EU official confirmed that ETIAS will not go live until May 2025.
What to know about ETIAS for US travelers?
If you have previously visited Europe without a visa you must now obtain authorization through ETIAS before you can go. According to the Henley Passport Index, US travelers now enjoy visa-free entry to 184 global destinations. While the United States currently has the eighth most powerful passport, this could change when the European Union imposes stricter documentation requirements for American travelers. The application fee is 7 euros or $7.79 US dollars, and will be available on the official ETIAS website as well as a mobile application. Email is used for all correspondence.
When are visas accepted for travel?
After being approved for travel visitors can stay in European countries that require an ETIAS for up to 90 days within any 180 days. Travelers must have a valid ETIAS throughout their stay. According to ETIAS, most applications should be disposed of within minutes. The European Union recommends that travelers apply for ETIAS authorization well in advance of their planned travel.
