Every government has pushed Islamabad into the swamp of debt, what is the debt story of Jinnah’s dream country?

India’s neighboring country Pakistan is always in the mood for war with India. But the truth is that Pakistan has already lost not at the hands of India but at the hands of its leaders. In the last two decades, the total public debt of Pakistan has increased by more than 1500 percent. After the year 2000, at the end of the term of every government of Pakistan, the public debt of the country increased by one and a half to two times. Then whether it is military rule singing the tune of patriotism or puppet governments of the army. The connivance of both has played an important role in bringing Pakistan’s economy into the trough. In the year 2000, the total debt of Pakistan was 3.1 trillion rupees. But in 2008, when the military rule of Musharraf ended in Pakistan, by that time the total debt of Pakistan had increased by 100 percent. It had increased to Rs 6.1 trillion.

What is the reason behind the poverty of any country? The first reason is the dwiddling currency reserve i.e. the end of treasury. The second reason is non-payment of tax by the public. Due to which the treasure gets depleted. The third big reason is to import only and only things and not export anything. In such a situation the money of that country is going out. Fourth and most important reason is to borrow money from other countries for development. The fifth reason is the devaluation of the currency.

In 2008, the government of the People’s Party of Pakistan came under the rule and it lasted till 2013. Pakistan’s public debt had increased by 130% to Rs 14.3 trillion over the five-year term. Nawaz Sharif’s government came after PPP and it lasted till 2018. During this period the public debt increased by 76 per cent to Rs 25 trillion. Then came the time when Pakistan’s cricket team captain-turned-politician Imran Khan came to power in the country. At the end of Imran’s 42-month rule, who took over with the slogan of Naya Pakistan, the debt burden stood at Rs 44.3 trillion. Pakistan’s debt increased by 77 percent during his four-and-a-half-year tenure.
