Rabuka said these stadiums, built with Chinese aid, have hosted many international events, boosting Fiji’s international influence and contributing to the country’s diplomacy and economic development. He also expressed appreciation to the Chinese Embassy in Fiji and Chongting International Engineering Company Limited.
The stadium, originally built with Chinese aid in 2002, played a key role in Fiji’s hosting of the 2003 South Pacific Games (now renamed the Pacific Games). In addition, China has once again provided free assistance for the renovation of the stadium’s outdoor swimming pool and hockey field from June 2022.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Chao Chien commented that the project exemplifies China’s firm support for Fiji’s sports industry and the positive trend of mutually beneficial cooperation and development between China and Fiji in various fields. This project, jointly implemented by China and Fiji, shows the promising prospects of the “Belt and Road” initiative.
