Iran’s official news agency IRNA quoted the country’s deputy police chief, Gen. Qasim Rezaei, as saying that the Taliban started firing on the border of Iran’s Sistan and Baluchistan province and Afghanistan’s Nimroz province on Saturday morning.

The Taliban and Iranian security forces exchanged fire on Saturday amid an ongoing dispute between Iran and Afghanistan over rights to the waters of the Helmand River. Iran’s official news agency IRNA quoted the country’s deputy police chief, Gen. Qasim Rezaei, as saying that the Taliban started firing on the border of Iran’s Sistan and Baluchistan province and Afghanistan’s Nimroz province on Saturday morning. According to the news agency, the shelling caused “several casualties and serious damage to property”.

At the same time, Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor accused Iran of starting the firing. Takor said two people, one from Afghanistan and the other from Iran, were killed in the shootout. Takor said a few others were injured in the firing. He said the situation is now under control. At the same time, the Iranian government has said that no Iranian security personnel were injured in the firing. However, the newspaper ‘Tehran Times’ said that three Iranian border guards were killed in the shootout.

Earlier this month, Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi warned the Taliban not to violate Iran’s territorial waters on the Helmand River. Raisi’s remarks were among the sharpest on Iran’s longstanding concerns about water. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki met with an Iranian envoy in Afghanistan to discuss Helmand River water rights.
