Phnom Penh Khuoen Sudri will take over as the Speaker of Cambodia’s new five-year National Assembly. Thus she will become the first woman to hold this top post in the country. This information was given by Prime Minister Samdech Teko Hun Sen. Sudri, 70, is currently the second deputy speaker of the National Assembly and a member of the Standing Committee of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP).
In a message released publicly on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said that ‘Khuon Sudri will become the President of the National Assembly in the new term, which will increase the role of women.’ A news agency reported that the current First Vice Speaker, Chiem Yep, will retain his post in the new term, and Wong Soth, the current Minister of Social Affairs, and Youth Rehabilitation, will take over as the Second Vice Speaker in this legislative body. ,
The announcement came after the ruling CPP led by the prime minister won 120 of the 125 seats in the National Assembly in the July 23 general election. The Prime Minister said that the new termed National Assembly and government would be formed on August 21 and 22 respectively.
